Earlier Works: Organ Boutique


   

Last year I produced a piece in response to organ trafficking. I only came across the piece due to being amazed that a man in China sold his kidney to buy a certain brand of electronic tablet. I felt sick reading about it, that a person would willing give away a part of themselves for a product that would be outdated in six or so months.

The idea of the organ boutique arose, that people in the future would possibly be happy to sell their organs or purchase new designer pieces as long as they fit in or were fashionable. Of course, charging extortionate rates to have the latest thing. The illustrations served to gather the piece slightly. Models always wear the most odd items in photoshoots but never seem to question it, so why not strip them back to their bare bones, as long as we’re keeping it high fashion.

The use of digital programmes


   

 

A collection of  experiments with digital media and giving shape to characters. My initial idea was for the comic to be produced in photoshop or another computer programme. Photoshop is a programme I have produced a fair amount of work in previously.  These artworks were testing how the computer would affect the pieces when drawn with a tablet. The top row and middle bottom are works produced solely in computer programmes. The top line pieces being produced through Adobe Photoshop CS4 with a Wacom tablet, the bottom piece being made in Paint Tool Sai. Sai has a nice approach to digital artwork with brushes being able to mimic watercolours and brush strokes. They could have been better pieces, however this was my first time using Sai, and the interface was a little difficult due to its simplicity and limited movement.

The two pieces located on the bottom row were mixed media pieces. From hand drawn comic pages, they were scanned into Illustrator to see how they would look over over the pieces I had sketched earlier. Although the designs came out exceptionally well, there was still the feeling that it wasn’t correct or at least not trying to display the feeling I needed from this, which was that there had to be textures and interesting variants within each piece. Unfortunately on computers, variations in tone and depth are already pre programmed, and can only really be changed slightly.

Exploration into two point perspective


So here we are! Perspective has been a very limited exploration site in earlier pieces of artwork, however I realise it is something that needs to be learnt to be able to improve.

These two pieces featured here are the first attempts. They started out simple but…well…they stopped being simple after about ten buildings.

Nature Profile


Portait pieces are always interesting to do. People’s profiles are exceptionally interesting things to draw, however, it changed slightly when I spilled ink onto it.

The water colours were not drying fast enough and began bleeding into the green in the centre. It was odd, I had wanted a simple silhouette with neat trees and definable shapes. What actually happened was the piece you see before you.

To be honest, I prefer it a lot more to the piece that was in my head.

Title and End Pages


Working with the idea of the larger perspective pieces featured earlier on the blog, I wanted to continue this idea of nature and mechanics.  Trying to figure out how to do this, I looked at the vein and artery systems of the body, using some references (and artistic license) I mapped each, represented by pipes and tree branches.

The pipe piece will be the front cover of the comic. I’m keeping it simple for people to focus on the smaller details, rather than getting lost in a overly detailed background. The tree piece will serve as the back cover, continuing the minimal theme, but showing the progress in the book as the woman finds herself introduced back into nature from the sterile city she has lived in for her whole life.

Also, some extras. Perspective is something that’s been a real Achilles heel of mine, but these turned out a lot better than I could have hoped!

Both were produced with fineliners, copic markers, and a lot of eraser marks!

That’s it so far! Eventually this may be released as a limited edition mini comic with high quality prints, as soon as the front and back cover are completed.
