Sherlock Nouveau: Gregory Lestrade

One I finished a few months ago but completely got lost in the university melee for posting!

Sketches and Thoughts

A snapshot into part of my process for producing the comic book. The comic itself is only a third of what I intend to actually produce. It’s slightly staged like the Star Wars time line, you get the middle part, then the first part will be produced, then the final. Rather enjoyable as the page at the end of the finished piece is a little bit of a cliff hanger.

These few sections show the exploration of a variety of mediums. My work is relatively small scale (these pages are from an A5 sketch/notepad). Although bic/biro pens are fantastic due to their ability to show tonal variation and allow for construction lines, though the preffered medium is usually fine liner pens. Easy to use and a variety of nibs, the pens used here didn’t survive that long to really explore their full potential. Watercolour is a relatively new medium to myself, yet the effects they give work fantastically. Relatively scratchy pieces get form from the loose colours applied over the top of the line work.

However, the favourite pieces in this small notebook are the coloured pencil portraits. Rarely has colour been a feature in my work before (at least, the traditional pieces). The comic allowed for venturing into something that I was quite apprehensive about.  Although still wary of such acidic colours, they will become something to work with more readily.

Earlier Works: Organ Boutique

Last year I produced a piece in response to organ trafficking. I only came across the piece due to being amazed that a man in China sold his kidney to buy a certain brand of electronic tablet. I felt sick reading about it, that a person would willing give away a part of themselves for a product that would be outdated in six or so months.

The idea of the organ boutique arose, that people in the future would possibly be happy to sell their organs or purchase new designer pieces as long as they fit in or were fashionable. Of course, charging extortionate rates to have the latest thing. The illustrations served to gather the piece slightly. Models always wear the most odd items in photoshoots but never seem to question it, so why not strip them back to their bare bones, as long as we’re keeping it high fashion.

Dystopia: A Mini-comic, pages 1-5

A personal project I am currently working on. The idea of a  mute comic has always been interesting due to the fact that the story relies entirely on the pictures given and the viewers imagination. Although there may be a narrative running through it, the real enjoyment personally is to see what people will take from simple images.

These are the first five pages produced.

This is the middle of the story, the main piece. I know, a little Star Wars, starting from the middle then darting in all directions. However I feel this is strong enough to stand on its own and to establish itself.

Sherlock Nouveau: Molly Hooper

So to carry on with the Sherlock theme, I went with one of my favourite characters, Molly. Molly is the relatable woman in the series and I just think she is fantastic, although trying to find references of any type were difficult! Also, looking at Forensic Pathology through the internet…some of the images will probably stick with me for the rest of my life.

As usual, they can be found over at my redbubble, and if you like them enough, i’d love you to buy a print or two!

Chell – Art Nouveau Portal

Okay guys. I wanted to do a Portal piece (because i’m dying to get my hands on a copy of 2 but unfortunately lack of money is the deciding factor here).

I’ve got a choice. Chell’s had two outfits and now I can’t decide which one I like more.

Any and all opinions welcome!

Such fantastic news! The lovely people over at For Human Peoples are now selling this piece as a poster.

You can find it here
