Sketches and Thoughts

A snapshot into part of my process for producing the comic book. The comic itself is only a third of what I intend to actually produce. It’s slightly staged like the Star Wars time line, you get the middle part, then the first part will be produced, then the final. Rather enjoyable as the page at the end of the finished piece is a little bit of a cliff hanger.

These few sections show the exploration of a variety of mediums. My work is relatively small scale (these pages are from an A5 sketch/notepad). Although bic/biro pens are fantastic due to their ability to show tonal variation and allow for construction lines, though the preffered medium is usually fine liner pens. Easy to use and a variety of nibs, the pens used here didn’t survive that long to really explore their full potential. Watercolour is a relatively new medium to myself, yet the effects they give work fantastically. Relatively scratchy pieces get form from the loose colours applied over the top of the line work.

However, the favourite pieces in this small notebook are the coloured pencil portraits. Rarely has colour been a feature in my work before (at least, the traditional pieces). The comic allowed for venturing into something that I was quite apprehensive about.  Although still wary of such acidic colours, they will become something to work with more readily.

Dystopia: 21 – end

That’s it so far! Eventually this may be released as a limited edition mini comic with high quality prints, as soon as the front and back cover are completed.

Dystopia: 16 – 20

Dystopia: 16-20

Dystopia: 11 – 15

Dystopia: Pages 11-15. A transition was needed from inside a cold, metallic city to the vibrance of unhindered nature. Watercolours are a particularly vibrant and sometimes uncontrollable medium, especially whilst also using powedered inks. The effects however came out really well with  a lot of depth and movement, which also carries on with the water.

Dystopia: 6-10

Sherlock Nouveau: Molly Hooper

So to carry on with the Sherlock theme, I went with one of my favourite characters, Molly. Molly is the relatable woman in the series and I just think she is fantastic, although trying to find references of any type were difficult! Also, looking at Forensic Pathology through the internet…some of the images will probably stick with me for the rest of my life.

As usual, they can be found over at my redbubble, and if you like them enough, i’d love you to buy a print or two!

Sherlock Nouveau : Irene Adler

I am a fan of the Sherlock series, and i’ve pretty much been dying to do some art work surrounding it. I haven’t had much time but then I thought, jesus christ, make some time. Who needs sleep anyway? I’m going to start this series with Irene. I loved her character in the series, plus I think Lara Pulver is a great actress.

A quick detail in the early stages!

Here we are so far. I thought the beaded ‘gown’ she wore was gorgeous. It still is, it’s just I don’t think my skill as of yet is good to show you it! I’ll carry on a little later but so far i’m really liking it. Apart from her feet, hobbit feet are not cool here.

I didn’t like the pink, so I just tinkered around with the colours and composition.

There we go! She’s all done ( I think….)

In case you fancy buying some work, i’ve got them as usual up on redbubble. I even added an iPhone case too!
