These pieces accompany the previously posted perspective drawings. The initial idea was to have one large strip of paper incorporating multiple perspective points of places inside and outside of the city. However, that piece in itself was a huge ontake, and would require much more skill than I currently possess. The most efficient way however of producing the same results was to make the piece over four smaller pieces of paper.
Each are A4 in size with different two point perspective in each. These two were much more difficult than the city pieces, believe it or not. The city itself is packed with multiple buildings, roads, factories etc whilst the outside is trees and ruins. Walkways and old stone buildings are strewn about the piece with varying sizes of trees, streams and rock precipices by the waterfalls. However, I am happy with how they have come out in the end. The leader lines are being kept in all the pieces to perpetuate the movement in each I wish to show the viewer. Also, it ties all the pieces in well together.
A not so quick city sector mock up! I imagine this place is teeming with people. Practically bursting at the seams, accommodating a huge amount of. With this in mind, research was done surrounding the idea of grid plans. Fascinating feats of engineering and city planning that really made me think that if these people levelled a large space of land to create something new, how would they create it?
The city itself is designed to benefit the highest bidder. How do they benefit? Surveillance. They have to know what’s going on, what people are thinking, doing, to tailor their needs specifically to them. This is where this plan came to mind. With towers based in the middle of each sector, constant surveillance could be maintained. If this was also under the guise of a super shopping centre/mall to treat all your needs, they could confirm what people were buying and what they disliked to further their control.
Many houses are also clustered outside so they are in constant view of the behemoth structure in the centre of the map. The towering highways keeping routes converging at the towers are also a ploy. Oddly, even with all these thoughts passing through my mind, I didn’t notice until some time ago that the sector makes a simple heart shape. Although subconsciously made, the idea works well for the city. The heart of each sector lies within the towers. Where all the main activity takes place. The veins, arteries and capillaries functioning as roads.
This piece was produced through stitching four images together in photoshop. Each piece here has used two point perspective, but in varying heights and widths to give a slightly disjointed and chaotic feeling.
They have come out out a lot better than expected, the feeling of movement and speed in the middle panels and calm outside. If all goes to plan, these will be printed on acetate with an ink wash underneath, creating a colour gradient.

A variety of sketches of possible residents of the comic. The comic that has been produced so far only tailors to a few other character designs. The sketches allowed for a wider ranger of ideas to be conveyed and the ideas I had but could not implement in this part of the comic.
I was inspired by more voluminous clothing styles and the fact that rarely in larger companies do you hear or see the actual CEO talking. They are like a rare animal, at press conferences you are more than likely to be faced with the marketing team or ‘sub – assistant- manager’. All identical almost, no real personality in their clothes and exceptionally forgettable.
The volume in clothing inspired me. These high up business owners were like phantoms, they had no shape to speak of, so why not implement this in my city? The higher up the food chain, the less shape you possess.
A snapshot into part of my process for producing the comic book. The comic itself is only a third of what I intend to actually produce. It’s slightly staged like the Star Wars time line, you get the middle part, then the first part will be produced, then the final. Rather enjoyable as the page at the end of the finished piece is a little bit of a cliff hanger.
These few sections show the exploration of a variety of mediums. My work is relatively small scale (these pages are from an A5 sketch/notepad). Although bic/biro pens are fantastic due to their ability to show tonal variation and allow for construction lines, though the preffered medium is usually fine liner pens. Easy to use and a variety of nibs, the pens used here didn’t survive that long to really explore their full potential. Watercolour is a relatively new medium to myself, yet the effects they give work fantastically. Relatively scratchy pieces get form from the loose colours applied over the top of the line work.
However, the favourite pieces in this small notebook are the coloured pencil portraits. Rarely has colour been a feature in my work before (at least, the traditional pieces). The comic allowed for venturing into something that I was quite apprehensive about. Although still wary of such acidic colours, they will become something to work with more readily.
